A film I enjoyed (Woman In Black)

A Film I Enjoyed recently

A film that I’ve watched, appreciated and enjoyed was the Thriller and drama, Woman in Black. This thrilling film was directed by James Atkins, with Jane Goldman having wrote the screen play. Actors that starred in this well-known film includes, actor Daniel Radcliff playing the role of Arthur Kipps. The film, play and book follow the story of Arthur Kipps who is a lawyer grieving his wife who tragically passed. He gets sent to an isolated, remote village to put someone’s deceased eccentric’s affairs in place. Here, he discovers his clients house is haunted by a ghost that mirrors a rejected woman who is terrorising and hurting the locals including kids consequently because of someone she sorrowfully lost.

The reason in which I enjoy this film so much is I think it portrays that everything is not what it seems and that there is a reason behind everyone’s actions. Furthermore, the people in the town surrounding Eel marsh house do not understand that the ‘Woman in Black’ had lost her son. I believe the use of suspenseful music, throughout the film, allows the audience to build up a thrilling fear, as well as making a suspenseful atmosphere which leaves the audience questioning what will happen next. This created a feeling of anticipation throughout the movie and left me longing to find out what happens next.

Moreover, although this is not my all-time favourite movie, I still find that it is a film that I could watch on repeat because of the continuous suspense and shock. Using different camera angles at different speeds allows the tension to flow throughout the movie.

As well as this, the angle of the camera is crafted extremely well in order to fulfil and capture shots that are at different angles.

Furthermore, I took note in the editing techniques used within the film. I picked up on a lot of jumps from one scene to another which are used in horror film to create suspense and tension within the audience and helps create the mood and atmosphere the director wants to create for the audience.

Carrying on, the Sound used in the film helped to draw me in and create a sense of shock. There was a large use of pace and speed within the sound and movie as a whole which I believe was awfully successful as it helped carry the suspenseful longing atmosphere throughout the entirety of the film.

I believe the use of costume design for ‘the woman’ being wearing full black which is effective as we link the colour black to things such as depression, evil, danger and gothic. As well as James Atkins deciding to keep her face hidden until the end which ones again helps to create a thrilling, unknowing atmosphere and an ongoing feeling of being on edge due to the uncertainty of where the story will unfold.
