Research Into Roles Of Production

Roles of production

As we will be eventually carrying out are own sequence, I will be carrying out a range of research into the main roles of production these being the camera operator, director, art of direction/ DOP, producer, sound and editor. This is in order to understand the roles we will be eventually be undertaking when carrying out our own sequence within our coursework. 

DIRECTOR 

The director is in charge of all creativity throughout the film,  they are in charge of this from post production all the way to the final edit. They are assigned this role by the producer whom they work alongside. The directors have many responsibilities such as the fact they must act in interest of the companies success, and to have confidentiality. 

Kathryn Bigelow is a female director from America. She was Born in San Carlos, California, United states on the 28th November 1951 making her 70 years old. Kathryn has covered a great variety of genres, including films such as Near Dark, Point Break, Strange Days. Kathryn is seen as an inspiration to woman across the world, due to her being the first woman to win the best director prize.

DOP  (director of photography)

The person who is in charge and liable for the filming/ photographing of the film. heir liable for how all actors dress, as well as the design of the set.

Steven Soderbergh is known to be the most famous director of photography. Soderbergh has worked on bundles of films wether it was as the Director of photography, Director, Producer, Editor, Writer or even in a few cases an Actor. Steven Soderbergh was the Director of photography in many films such as the recent films - 'The sudden move (2021)', and  'Let them all talk'(2020).

PRODUCER 

The producer works along side the director to make the directors ideas possible and achievable.  It is the producer whom must approve production costs and not only is their job within the creative aspects of the film but  they must also tackle the practical and financial side. 

Frank Marshall is an American producer whom started in 1968 and is still doing his job to this day. A lot of the time Frank Marshall is working alongside Kathleen Kennedy who is his wife. Himself and his wife co-founded Amblin entertainment with the famous Steven Spielburg in 1981. All working on films such as the BFG together. Individually Marshall has worked on films such as 'Alive' (1993), 'Congo' (1995),  'Eight Below'(2006), as-well as the 5th 'indiana Jones ' which is planning on being released in 2023.

SOUND  DESIGNER / DIRECTOR

A Sound designers job is to create all the sound effects, whether thats recording them or creating them live upon set.  Sound designers/ directors are usually required to supervise and help perfect the spoken dialogue, making sure it appears to be clear and of the correct volume.

Ben Burtt whom is a famous sound designer used to have a job part time cataloging Columbia sound library. IT was here he received
a c all from Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz who then offered him a job in Star War's sound department. Burtt has worked on a wide range of films including the Star Wars franchise, the Indiana film series, E.T, WALL-E, and Star Trek.

CAMERA OPERATORS

A camera operator job is most obviously one of the most crucial jobs among film. They are required to capture all the action, and capture everything which is included in the final film.

Roger Deakins is a major Camera Operator among the film industry. He is famous for his work with huge directors such as the Coen Brothers.
EDITOR

An editors job is to go through all the fresh footage and sort through it all until you select the final shots and place them into a sequence to create the final product, as well as making changes technically.

Thelma Schoon maker is a famous editor and is known for her work in films such as The Irish Man, The Aviator and the Departed. She is the second most nominated editor in academy awards history.
